Looking for a fun, local day trip? Here’s my ideas for the best paces for a fun time in Golden Valley.
Archer's Creamery
If you like ice cream you already know Archer’s has some of the best homemade ice-cream. Did you know eighty percent of their milk and cream comes from their own dairy? Also ingredients like apples, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are grown on their farm.
State Forest Hiking
Regardless of your athletic ability, the state forest has hiking trails for beginners to super advanced hikers. The trails are well marked, well maintained, and the forest service offers free maps. Its a beautiful place to stroll, take pictures of wild life, or just get away for the day.
Pup-n-Putt
What says fun more than hotdogs and eighteen holes of miniature golf. Pup-n-Putt has been in business for twenty years and updates their obstacles yearly. Friday nights they run a “date night” special where two can play for the price of one. If you think you can handle it, try their Everything dog.
Merchant Street Downtown
Sure you can buy stuff at the mall, but a stroll down the town’s main boulevard is much more fun and interesting. Merchant street is home to dozen small and unique businesses. Shop local people! Cindy’s Chocolates (right next to Archer’s Creamery – see above) makes all their candy in house. Silver’s Flowers sells home grown plants to exotic cut flowers. Garcia’s Music not only sales new instruments but fixes used instruments and gives music lessons. Check out their selection of used vinyl and concert memorabilia (It’s really cool). The Arts and Crafts Co-op displays artists’ work in their gallery, but has a great crafts shop where you can find unique gifts and treasures in all price ranges. When you get hungry there’s plenty to eat, From Ground Up Coffee Cafe to Silvia’s (super fancy) to pizza at Buy the Slice.
Kiwanis Lodge Gardens
The Kiwanis original meeting lodge is a log cabin just two miles from downtown and on the list of historical buildings. Behind the newer meeting hall is a beautiful arboretum (a place where trees are planted) and flower garden. Plants were selected for their year round colors. Best of all it’s free to visit and open to the public
Fair & Rodeo Grounds
The big three annual events held at the Fair & Rodeo Grounds are the 4H County Fair (last week of July), the Kiwanis Benefit Rodeo (third week of August), and the Harvest Festival (early October). The rest of the year you can find dog agility trials, horse shows – both western and English, and craft fairs. Check local listings to see whats going on this weekend.
